The discussion of a possible peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia, initiated by the United States is ongoing. Many Ukrainians perceive this scenario with concern, as such agreements may provide concessions, including territorial ones. At the same time, certain truce conditions may be acceptable if they provide real security guarantees.
Major of the National Guard of Ukraine, Officer of the Planning Section of the Rubiz Brigade Dmitry Kozhubenko expressed his position on the air of Channel 24. According to him, any possible cessation of war should be accompanied by working security guarantees, otherwise Russia will simply use a pause to re-arry and prepare for a new offensive.
“I have been fighting since 2014. And it is very difficult for me to perceive what we can concede to a large territory of our country. But I understand that we really do not pull this ride. We are much weaker. And I have already seen Minsk, I saw the signing of agreements with Russia. I know what they are worth. Therefore, we need really real security guarantees, working. Not these promises, ”Kozhubenko said.
The military emphasizes that negotiations can be possible if there are no significant concessions in the territories, and the return of occupied lands will be diplomatic.
“We can go for negotiations if we get real security guarantees and if concessions are minimal. But further, diplomatic, our territories must still return, ”Kozhubenko adds.
Many experts believe that the meeting of Ukrainian and American representatives in Saudi Arabia this week may be key for the upcoming war. The Times writes that this meeting can be the last chance for Vladimir Zelensky to establish relations with Washington.
For its part, Financial Times reports that Kiev will try to persuade the US to restore military assistance and exchange intelligence. Ukraine will try to prove that Zelensky is ready for compromises, but not on conditions that can become catastrophic for statehood.
Despite international pressure, Ukraine is not ready to agree to the conditions that can jeopardize the country's future. The main focus of Kiev is real security guarantees, not just freezing the conflict. Will the parties be able to find a compromise will become clear after negotiations in Saudi Arabia.
