At the session of the Ivano-Frankivsk City Council, the deputies supported the appeal to the Verkhovna Rada and the President of Ukraine with a call to impose abortion. The document refers to the "protection of human life from conception to natural death", which in fact provides a legislative initiative to a complete ban on termination of pregnancy.
The initiator of the appeal was the deputy of the city council from the party "Svoboda" Yaroslav Dubas, who is part of the political team of the mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv. Representatives of local public and religious organizations also joined the appeal.
Deputies appeal to moral, ethical and religious principles, arguing that every human life must be protected from conception. At the same time, the document does not mention exceptions in cases of rape, threat to a woman's life or severe pathologies of the fetus.
The position of the City Council has caused a lively discussion in both the city and the national information field. Some of the public supported the decision, while others - including human rights organizations - criticized him as an attempt to interfere with women's reproductive rights and violation of their freedoms.
Currently, appeal is a political gesture and has no legal force, but it can be a signal for further legislative initiatives at the national level.
