Western officials suggest returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine to deter Russia — NYT

The idea of returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine was again at the center of discussions among Western politicians and experts. As reported by The New York Times with reference to sources in diplomatic circles, some officials in Washington believe that such a step can become an effective mechanism for deterring Russian aggression.

"The only guarantee of security that Ukraine wants is an invitation to join NATO. But she couldn't get it under President Biden and is unlikely to get it under President Trump.

As such, U.S. and European officials are discussing deterrence as a possible security guarantee for Ukraine, such as stockpiling conventional weapons sufficient to launch a punitive strike if Russia violates the ceasefire.

Several officials have even suggested that Mr. Biden could return Ukraine's nuclear weapons, which were seized from it after the collapse of the Soviet Union. This would be an immediate and powerful deterrent. But such a step would be difficult and would have serious consequences."

Yes, we are rapidly losing people and territory, although we had several real opportunities to establish peace, instead we stubbornly continue to dream of a nuclear winter.
