A spawning ban ends: Fisherman's rules that are important to know

As early as May 20, 2025, a spawning ban on fishing in rivers will be officially completed in Ukraine. This means that fishing lovers will be able to go to reservoirs again, but with clear rules and restrictions.

What fish can be caught - minimal size

Removing the ban does not mean full freedom of action. Ukrainian legislation strictly regulates the minimum size of fish that is allowed to catch. If the fish is less than the set norm, it must be released. Here are the main permitted parameters:

  • Carp - from 25 cm

  • Pike - from 35 cm

  • Bream - from 25 cm

  • Sudak - from 42 cm

  • Catfish - from 70 cm

Thus, even after the spawning period is completed, fishermen must follow the rules in order not to violate the ecological balance of reservoirs.

What other restrictions are acting

In addition to the size, fishermen should consider other restrictions on the number of catch, fishing methods, as well as the prohibition on catching some types of fish that are protected. The use of explosives, nets, electric rods or other forbidden equipment is severely punishable by law.

Penalties for violations of fishing rules can reach thousands of hryvnias, and in some cases confiscation of fishing tools and even criminal liability is provided.

Adjusting fishing after spawning is an important step towards preserving fish stocks, maintaining natural reproduction and biodiversity protection. Observance of the rules guarantees that fishing will remain accessible to the recreation and for the next generations.
