Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Kyiv today, said during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky that "now is not the era of wars." This was announced at a briefing by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India, Subramanyam Jaishankar.
Jaishankar noted that the main part of Modi's talks with Zelensky was devoted to the war in Ukraine. The Prime Minister of India shared his conversations with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
"Most of the negotiations were actually related to the conflict. The Prime Minister spoke about our position, which I will briefly explain: this is not the era of wars. Dialogue and diplomacy are key factors. The solution will not be found on the battlefield. He shared a widely held view of the implications of this conflict for the global South,” Jaishankar said.
During the talks with Modi, Zelensky called on the Indian Prime Minister to join the statement following the peace conference in Switzerland. India participated in the summit but did not sign the document. India's Ministry of External Affairs explained it this way:
"In our opinion, only those options that are acceptable to both sides can lead to sustainable peace. In accordance with this approach, we have decided to avoid association with a joint communiqué or any other document adopted as a result of this summit."
It is currently unknown what exactly Modi answered Zelensky this time. Modi urged Ukraine and Russia to start negotiations.
"Both sides need to sit down together and look for ways out of this crisis. I want to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in any attempt to advance peace. And if I can personally play any role, I will, I assure you as a friend,” Modi said.
