The mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klychko, announced that the commissioning works on the updated section of the tunnel between the Demiivska and Lybidska stations have been completed. From September 12, full train traffic will resume between the "Heroiv Dnipra" and "Teremka" stations.
The renovation lasted 9 months and included a wide range of works. The construction site was prepared, more than 200 cable networks were laid, in particular from DTEK and Ukrtelecom. The old part of the tunnel with a length of 27 meters was dismantled, and a new section with a length of more than 50 meters was built in its place. New tracks were installed, all engineering networks were restored, and train safety systems were adjusted.
Klitschko noted that during the repair, complex hydrogeological conditions were taken into account, which required waterproofing of the tunnel lining and chemical stabilization of the soil. The total estimated cost of the works amounted to UAH 383 million, which is UAH 62 million less than the initial cost.
The mayor also announced that during the restoration work, expert studies were conducted into the causes of the problems with the tunnel. It turned out that the main reasons were errors in the design and poor performance of construction works. The tunnel was designed for a lower level of groundwater, and violations in the quality of the installation of the rings and the absence of necessary compensatory measures were also found.
Research has confirmed gross violations during construction, in particular, the lack of chemical stabilization of the soil around the tunnel.
