The weapon was in the safe: a teenager in Chernivtsi shot himself with his brother's gun

The tragic incident occurred today, July 30, in Chernivtsi on Holovna Street. As reported by the Main Directorate of the National Police in Chernivtsi region, a 14-year-old teenager committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a firearm.

According to preliminary information, the boy died in the ambulance before the paramedics arrived. His body has been sent for forensic examination.

Law enforcement officers found out that the gun used in the shooting belonged to the deceased's older brother. The weapon was officially registered and, according to the owner, was stored in a safe at his place of residence. How exactly the teenager gained access to the gun is currently being investigated.

Information about the incident has been entered into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine with the note “suicide”. The police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident, including possible motives for the act.

The investigation also checks the proper storage of weapons and compliance with safety rules.
