Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his support for the absolute world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk ahead of his upcoming fight with British boxer Tyson Fury. A video of the president's conversation with the boxer was posted on social media.
During the conversation, Zelensky noted that Usyk looks “strong” and shared his wishes for victory. He emphasized the importance of each athlete’s achievement for the Ukrainian people:
“Every victory of yours lifts the spirits and energizes Ukrainians. Everyone is a big fan of your talent, courage, and success.”
The President also joked about Great Britain's support for Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression:
“When you beat Fury, don't [beat him] too hard, or they'll ban us from Storm Shadow, missiles…”
Usyk humorously replied that he takes the advice with respect, but emphasized that a boxing match is just a sport. The boxer said that he is in a good mood, although the last week before a fight is usually filled with anticipation and tension.
“The waiting, the training – every day the time doesn’t last as long as usual,” Usyk shared.
The fight between Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Usyk and Briton Tyson Fury will take place on December 21 in Saudi Arabia. The WBC, WBA, and WBO heavyweight world titles will be at stake.
Usyk, who has already become famous for his technique and tenacity, will get a chance to once again prove his superiority on the international stage.
President Zelensky emphasized that Usyk's victory will be not only his personal achievement, but also a source of inspiration for the entire country.
“Keep the blow for Ukraine!” – this symbolic call by Zelensky reflects the sentiments of millions of Ukrainians who support their hero.
