Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law banning the activities of religious organizations affiliated with Russia. The law will take effect in 30 days, giving religious communities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) nine months to sever ties with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC).
“08/24/2024 – returned with the signature of the President of Ukraine,” the notification on the status of the document states.
It was previously reported that the law will come into force in 30 days, but the communities of the UOC-MP will have 9 months to sever ties with the ROC.
The People's Deputies finally adopted draft law No. 8371 by 265 votes, which provides for a ban on the activities of religious organizations affiliated with the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine.
The draft law was developed to implement the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine of December 1, 2022. It amends a number of laws and makes it impossible for religious organizations whose management center is located in the Russian Federation to operate in Ukraine.
