Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may meet in the coming days to discuss the acute energy conflict. As reported by iRozhlas , the parties are actively looking for a date for the meeting.
Tensions between the two countries increased after Kyiv decided to stop the transit of Russian gas through its territory after the expiration of the current contract. Fico reacted sharply, accusing Ukraine of sabotage, which he said would cost Slovakia half a billion euros annually in lost transit revenue.
The Slovak prime minister threatened Ukraine with retaliatory measures, in particular the termination of electricity supply. In turn, Zelensky called it the opening of a second energy front against Ukraine in favor of the Kremlin.
Slovakia, which has long depended on Russian gas, is now forced to look for alternatives. The country's largest supplier, the SPP company, announced its readiness to ensure gas supplies from other sources in 2025. However, this may cause additional costs, because transporting gas through other routes will be more expensive.
Previously, Fico proposed holding negotiations on Slovak territory. In response, Zelensky invited him to Kyiv. However, according to the Vice-Speaker of the Slovak Parliament, Tibor Gaspar, the Prime Minister of Slovakia does not plan to go to the Ukrainian capital.
The resolution of the conflict depends on the success of future negotiations. Will Zelenskyi and Fico find a compromise that will ease the tension and restore cooperation? The question remains open, but a clear strategy of both sides will be a determining factor in future relations between Ukraine and Slovakia.
