Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may meet in the coming days to discuss the acute energy conflict. According to the iRozhlas , the parties are actively looking for a date for the meeting.
Tensions between the two countries have risen after Kyiv decided to stop Russian gas transit through its territory after the current contract expired. Fico reacted sharply, accusing Ukraine of sabotage, which he said would cost Slovakia half a billion euros annually in lost transit revenues.
The Slovak prime minister threatened Ukraine with retaliatory measures, including cutting off electricity supplies. In turn, Zelensky called this the opening of a second energy front against Ukraine in favor of the Kremlin.
Slovakia, long dependent on Russian gas, is now forced to look for alternatives. The country's largest supplier, SPP, has said it is ready to secure gas supplies from other sources by 2025. However, this could entail additional costs, as transporting gas via other routes will be more expensive.
Earlier, Fico proposed to hold talks on Slovak territory. Zelenskyy in response invited him to Kyiv. However, according to the Vice Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Tibor Gaspar, the Slovak Prime Minister does not plan to go to the Ukrainian capital.
The resolution of the conflict depends on the success of future negotiations. Will Zelensky and Fico find a compromise that will allow them to relieve tension and resume cooperation? The question remains open, but a clear strategy on both sides will be a determining factor in future relations between Ukraine and Slovakia.
