Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that his children, daughter Oleksandra and son Kyrylo, are staying in Kyiv despite the threats posed by a full-scale war. He made the statement during an interview, emphasizing the importance of family support and personal responsibility to the country.
He stated this in an interview with the Italian TV channel RaiNews24. According to the president, children are the strongest Ukrainians. Answering the question of host Paolo Petrecchi about what the three years of the great war were like for him, Zelensky said:
“As for every person. President Zelensky, the same person as all our people. It was not easy for us. I really respect our people, who are simply great. From the very beginning of the war, they defended Ukraine, their homes. Each of our homes is our country. It is very important that people stood up and showed the whole world that they are fighting simply for their own. On the battlefield, of course, our heroes are the military who protect us. But the strongest Ukrainians today are our children. They are going through this test unfairly. It is really scary when you see our children growing up right before your eyes.”
Volodymyr and Olena Zelensky have two children, 19-year-old Oleksandra and 11-year-old Kyrylo. The daughter is studying law in Kyiv, and the son is a schoolboy.
“This is my happiness. One of the most positive things that can happen to a person in life is children. They are in Kyiv. They are going through this war together with other children. When sirens, when missile attacks — they go down to bomb shelters in schools, universities. But this is the reality. I am very glad that they are in Ukraine. This is an example for others. If there are no children on the streets, if we do not see their eyes, then the question arises, who are we fighting for? We are fighting for their values, yes, and for our own, but first of all — for the future of our children. And it is very important that they are in Ukraine,” he noted.
