Ukraine, in negotiations in Saudi Arabia, seeks to persuade the United States to restore intelligence and military support. The main argument of Kyiv will be a demonstration of President Vladimir Zelensky's willingness to end the war with Russia as soon as possible. This was reported by Financial Times with reference to knowledgeable officials.
According to officials, Ukraine plans to offer a partial ceasefire against longitudinal drones, rocket strokes and fighting in the Black Sea. Kyiv hopes that such a step will make Washington review the decision to freeze intelligence exchange and supply weapons.
One of the Ukrainian officials said that in the short term Kyiv would focus on restoring relations with the United States. Two European officials added that Ukraine is considering progress in ceasefire negotiations as a condition for returning military and intelligence.
According to FT, because of the US pressure, the Zelensky administration has changed its position. Political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko explains that earlier Kiev planned to receive security guarantees first and then negotiate a ceasefire. However, after intense contacts with the White House, the priorities have changed.
“The tactics have changed. Now the main thing is to normalize relations with the United States. Donald Trump believes that Ukraine does not seek cessation of fire, so our main goal is to prove the opposite and initiate direct negotiations with Russia, ”Fesenko notes.
Despite the change in the approach, Kyiv does not refuse to attract the US to a possible ceasefire. According to European officials who communicated with Ukrainian colleagues, Washington can participate in monitoring compliance with the agreement. This may include the use of American satellites and intelligence.
Negotiations in Saudi Arabia will be an important stage for Ukraine in an attempt to restore US support and resolve diplomatic relations against the background of military conflict.
