President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has submitted draft laws No. 10456 and No. 10457 to the Verkhovna Rada, which provide for the extension of the term of martial law and general mobilization in the country. According to the draft laws , it is proposed to extend these legal regimes for 90 days, which is until May 14, 2024. This initiative is intended to ensure the security and defense capability of Ukraine in the context of the escalating conflict with Russia.
Martial law was introduced in Ukraine due to full-scale armed aggression by Russia. This legal regime gives state authorities, military command, and local governments the necessary powers to avert the threat and ensure the safety of citizens.
General mobilization , in turn, is an operational mechanism for replenishing the ranks of the Armed Forces and is carried out simultaneously throughout the territory of Ukraine. During mobilization, citizens aged 18 to 60 who can perform military duty are subject to conscription. They are mainly men. Mobilized persons who do not have experience in military service are sent to training centers for professional training, after which they are assigned to service in accordance with the needs of the Armed Forces.
Zelenskyy has asked the Verkhovna Rada to consider and approve these draft laws. The procedure for their adoption involves the signing of relevant decrees by the President of Ukraine, consideration in the Defense Committee, and voting in the Verkhovna Rada chamber, where a minimum number of votes of 226 or more is required for adoption.
This is the tenth parliamentary vote to extend martial law and general mobilization since the beginning of the conflict with Russia. The government and parliament of Ukraine continue to take decisive measures to ensure the country's defense capabilities and uphold territorial integrity in the face of geopolitical tensions.
