The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, submitted draft laws No. 10456 and No. 10457 to the Verkhovna Rada for consideration, which provide for the extension of martial law and general mobilization in the country. According to draft laws , it is proposed to extend these legal regimes for 90 days, until May 14, 2024. This initiative is intended to ensure the security and defense capability of Ukraine in the context of the escalation of the conflict with Russia.
Martial law was introduced in Ukraine due to the full-scale armed aggression of Russia. This legal regime provides the state authorities, military command and local self-government bodies with the necessary powers to avert the threat and ensure the safety of citizens.
General mobilization , in turn, is an operational mechanism for replenishing the ranks of the Armed Forces and is carried out simultaneously throughout the territory of Ukraine. During mobilization, citizens aged 18 to 60 who can perform military duty are subject to conscription. They are mostly men. Mobilized persons who do not have military service experience are sent to training centers for professional training, after which they are assigned to serve in accordance with the needs of the Armed Forces.
Zelensky appealed to the Verkhovna Rada to consider and approve these draft laws. The procedure for their adoption involves signing the relevant decrees by the President of Ukraine, consideration by the Defense Committee, as well as voting in the Verkhovna Rada hall, where the minimum number of votes required for adoption is 226 or more.
This is already the tenth vote of the parliament regarding the continuation of martial law and general mobilization since the beginning of the conflict with Russia. The Government and Parliament of Ukraine continue to take decisive measures to ensure the country's defense capability and defend territorial integrity in the face of geopolitical tensions.
