President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, in his interview for the American publication The Philadelphia Inquirer, renounced the idea of introducing a lottery for army conscription, similar to the one operating in the USA or Lithuania. He noted that such an approach is unethical, especially for those who are already at the front.
Zelenskyi believes that problems with conscription can be solved in other ways that do not include a lottery. He emphasized that it is important to establish a clear order of conscription in order to avoid uncertainty for conscripts and their families. Zelensky noted that the current conscription system creates significant instability in people's lives and exposed compliance to random factors.
He supports the idea of implementing a transparent, predictable system that would allow specialists and civilians to deal with the provision of the army without being spontaneously mobilized. Such an approach, in his opinion, could reduce corruption in the field of conscription and ensure a fairer distribution of duties.
Finally, Zelensky emphasized that the main ethical problem lies in the conditions of service of those who are already at the front, compared to those who have responsibilities at home. He called on society and the state to deal with this issue more actively to ensure fair conditions for all conscripts.
