Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the country never planned to develop nuclear weapons, saying Ukraine has other priorities in the security and defense sectors. The remarks came amid growing tensions over nuclear security in the context of war with Russia.
The President called information about Ukraine's plans to create nuclear weapons a "throwaway." As we will recall, this was reported by the German Bild.
At the same time, Zelenskyy stated that nuclear weapons could protect Ukraine.
"I believe that Ukraine should be in NATO and the argument is that during the Budapest Memorandum we gave up nuclear weapons and were guaranteed security. If Ukraine did not give up nuclear weapons, it would be the same "umbrella" that other nuclear states have," the president said in an interview on a telethon.
