Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasizes that it is impossible to hold elections in the country during martial law, as this requires changes to the current legislation. The head of state told journalist Bruno Vespi during an interview for the Italian TV channel Rai 1.
In particular, he was asked whether he would postpone the elections due to martial law in Ukraine. “In order to hold elections during martial law, the relevant legislation in Ukraine needs to be changed. Elections are impossible during martial law,” Zelensky emphasized.
The president also noted that it is important to treat the Ukrainian military, who are currently in the trenches, with respect. “We must give them the opportunity to express their will, this is very important. This is simply unfair. I spoke about this when people who defend our land do not have the opportunity to vote,” Zelensky said.
In addition, he added that it is necessary to understand how seven million Ukrainians abroad will vote. “This requires a special infrastructure,” Zelensky emphasized.
