The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, emphasizes that it is impossible to hold elections in the country during martial law, as this requires changes in the current legislation. The head of state told journalist Bruno Vespi about this during an interview for the Italian TV channel Rai 1.
In particular, he was asked whether he would postpone the elections due to the state of war in Ukraine. "In order to hold elections during the period of martial law, the relevant legislation needs to be changed in Ukraine. Elections are impossible during martial law," Zelenskyy emphasized.
The president also noted that it is important to treat Ukrainian soldiers who are currently in the trenches with respect. "We must give them the opportunity to express their will, this is very important. It's just not fair. I spoke about it when the people who protect our land do not have the opportunity to vote," Zelenskyy said.
In addition, he added that it is necessary to understand how the seven million Ukrainians living abroad will vote. "This requires a special infrastructure," Zelensky emphasized.
