Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Spain and Portugal next week. The visit, scheduled for mid-May, was postponed due to the Russian offensive in the northern Kharkiv region.
According to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, official events with Zelensky's participation will take place in Madrid on Monday, May 27. The Ukrainian president is scheduled to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and King Felipe. Zelensky is expected to arrive in Spain on Sunday.
This will be Zelensky's first bilateral visit to Spain. Last October, he was in Granada for the European Political Community summit as part of Spain's EU presidency. During this visit, it is planned to sign a bilateral agreement on security guarantees between Spain and Ukraine.
After his visit to Spain, Zelensky will visit Portugal. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has not yet officially confirmed the planned meeting with Zelensky, but CNN Portugal reports that the meeting will take place on Tuesday.
Zelenskyy previously announced new security agreements. He noted that the agreements already signed with Latvia, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands could be joined by Nordic countries and possibly the United States.
Ukraine negotiates security guarantees with a number of partner countries, but they are not always real guarantees.
