The criminals organized the resale of stolen cars in Kyiv to Europe

During the temporary occupation of Kyiv region in 2022, when the region came under the control of Russian troops, more than 140 cars were stolen. Criminals created a whole network for the resale of stolen vehicles, which aimed to sell cars both in Ukraine and abroad, in particular in the countries of the European Union. Among the suspects are seven people who organized and implemented this criminal scheme, starting with stealing cars and ending with their legalization in Europe.

How the scheme worked:

Theft of cars
About 140 new cars were stolen from car dealerships in the capital during the occupation of Kyiv region. All these vehicles fell into the hands of an organized group that engaged in their resale.

Forgery of documents and change of identification numbers
In order to further sell stolen cars, the members of the criminal group changed the identification numbers of bodies and units, as well as forged documents such as registration certificates and insurances.

Transportation of cars abroad
Cars with false documents were transported to border regions, and then transported to Europe through Transcarpathia. A key role in this part of the operation was played by the customs inspector, who ensured the smooth movement of vehicles across the border.

Legalization and sale
Once in Europe, the cars were registered as new. Thanks to false documents, stolen cars became part of legal sales in EU countries.

Law enforcement officials have already informed seven members of the group about the suspicion. Five suspects were taken into custody, one was declared wanted, and another is already in custody. Prosecutors qualify the case under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including forgery of documents and legalization of criminal proceeds.
