A study by scientists at Queen's University Belfast has shown that regular consumption of foods rich in flavonoids is associated with lower blood pressure. The results of the study are published in the British Heart Foundation.
The scientists paid particular attention to strawberries and blueberries. These berries are rich in anthocyanins, natural plant compounds that give berries their bright red, blue and purple hues. It is these compounds that, as researchers have found, contribute to improving the functioning of the cardiovascular system.
The study found that women who ate more than three servings of blueberries or strawberries per week had a 34% lower risk of heart attack compared to those who ate fewer berries.
Scientists explain that anthocyanins increase the elasticity of blood vessels and help normalize blood pressure, a key risk factor for heart attack. In addition, researchers suggest that the gut may be partly responsible for the beneficial effects of flavonoids on heart health.
Regularly including berries in your diet can be an effective natural way to support your cardiovascular system and reduce the risk of heart disease.
