An unusual natural phenomenon — a tornado — was recorded in the Brovary district of the Kyiv region. A video of the atmospheric vortex, which quickly gained popularity on social networks, was published by subscribers of the Telegram channel "Real Kyiv".
Experts explain that the observed phenomenon is more like a tornado - a type of tornado, which in terms of the nature of its formation is almost the same as its more powerful counterpart. As ecologist Oleksandr Sokolenko told TSN.ua, tornadoes arise due to the collision of contrasting air masses - warm and cold. The sharper the temperature change, the higher the risk of vortexes.
"Tornadoes most often occur in regions with constant contrasts of air masses, for example, in the southern United States. In Ukraine, these phenomena are rare and usually less powerful," the expert noted.
According to Sokolenko, in Ukraine, tornadoes are usually recorded in the south - in the Odessa region and near the Black Sea. However, the tornado in the Kyiv region is explained by an anomalous temperature drop: after unusually warm weather a week ago, cold Arctic air suddenly invaded the region.
The specialist emphasized that the appearance of a tornado in April is atypical for Ukraine and that such phenomena usually occur in the summer, during the period of peak solar activity. Therefore, such an early recording of a tornado may indicate already noticeable climate changes.
Although the recorded tornado looked spectacular, according to the ecologist, its strength was small: the whirlwind could at most knock a person off their feet or tear something out of their hands, but not cause large-scale destruction.
Oleksandr Sokolenko also warns that in the future the number of such natural phenomena in Ukraine may increase. Although they are currently less destructive than in the United States, with further climate change Ukraine risks encountering dangerous atmospheric whirlwinds more often.
