The German authorities have decided to provide additional military aid to Ukraine in the amount of 397 million euros. This financial support was a response to the deterioration of the situation at the front, which poses a real threat to Ukraine without increased material support from allies. The corresponding request was initiated by the German Ministry of Defense and approved by the Ministry of Finance, which turned to the budget committee of the lower house of parliament for approval of this amount.
According to the information provided in the letter from the German authorities, the received "unplanned need" for additional aid became clear in the last few weeks and is in line with Germany's constitutional and budgetary requirements. This aid must be allocated immediately to implement the measures planned for implementation as early as 2024.
Germany's financial support for Ukraine
Germany is one of Ukraine's leading partners in the fight against Russian aggression, and in 2024 its military budget for aid to Ukraine was about 8 billion euros. However, despite these significant numbers, cuts are already on the horizon.
On August 17, it became known that from 2025, the volume of German military aid to Ukraine will begin to decrease. In 2025, aid will amount to 4 billion euros, and in 2026 - only 3 billion. Further, in 2027 and 2028, the funding of Ukraine's military support will decrease to 500 million euros per year.
According to German media, this decision was related to a personal request of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Despite this, aid that has already been approved will continue to be provided to Ukraine, but any new requests from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine may not be approved in the future.
The importance of military aid against the backdrop of war
Additional aid in the amount of 397 million euros is extremely important for Ukraine, which continues to fight against the background of difficult conditions on the front. This reinforcement will help not only to hold the defense, but also to support possible counter-offensive actions.
Despite future funding cuts, Ukraine continues to receive significant support from Germany and other international partners, which is important for the continued fight against the aggressor.
