Modern research confirms that even those products that seem beneficial can hide serious health risks.
We are talking about fruit juices, which are traditionally considered a "vitamin" alternative to sweet carbonated water. However, scientists from the French public health agency have found that regular consumption of juice can increase the likelihood of developing cancer.
What the study showed
The study, published in the British Medical Journal, followed more than 100,000 people, 79% of whom were women, for five years, who completed questionnaires about their diets every six months.
It turned out that the average amount of fruit juice consumed was about 93 ml per day. An additional 100 ml of this drink increased the risk of developing all types of cancer by 18%, and the likelihood of developing breast cancer in women by 22%.
Why juices can be harmful
Scientists suggest that the reason lies in the high sugar content:
-
it affects the accumulation of visceral fat surrounding the internal organs;
-
increases blood sugar levels.
Both of these factors, according to doctors, can increase the risk of developing cancer.
Fruit juices should not be completely excluded from the diet, but consuming them in large quantities is dangerous. Doctors advise giving preference to whole fruits, as they contain fiber, which helps reduce the negative effects of sugars.
