How much do eggs cost in stores now?

Over the last year, eggs in Ukraine have risen in price by more than 30%. The average price of a dozen on the shelves is 78 hryvnias, although in the autumn there was a slight decrease in the price - within 5-6 hryvnias.

Reasons for falling prices in autumn

Maksym Hopka, an expert from the association "Ukrainian Club of Agrarian Business" explained that the short-term price reduction could be due to several factors:

  1. Increase in supply : A decrease in export shipments has created a surplus in the domestic market.
  2. Warm weather conditions : Producers have reduced the cost of heating rooms for keeping birds.
  3. Promotional retail policy : Supermarkets, receiving goods at a slightly lower price, stimulated sales through promotions.

However, these short-term factors cannot restrain the general tendency to rise in prices.

Why are eggs more expensive?

The main reason is the cost of production. The analyst emphasized that about 70% of expenses are for poultry feed. In the coming months, a significant decrease in the price of fodder is not expected, but on the contrary, there is a risk of their price increase.

Difficult weather conditions, characteristic of January-February, can significantly affect the costs of producers:

  • In frosts up to -10°C and below, heat costs will increase, which can increase the final cost of products.
  • At a temperature of 0°C to -5°C, costs will remain stable, which will avoid another price spike.

Maksym Hopka believes that egg prices may rise in winter, but their stabilization is expected in spring. An increase in market supply and a decrease in production costs will contribute to a return to a more stable price level.
