In Ternopil region, law enforcement officers and environmentalists are investigating the fact of a mass fish death in the Strypa River. According to preliminary data, the cause was the blocking of a dam by unknown persons, which caused a sharp drop in the water level, causing a fish plague.
The incident occurred in the village of Medova, Kozivska community, where on September 18, during preventive work, police officers discovered a significant number of dead fish on the shore. Specialists from the State Environmental Inspectorate and the fish protection patrol were involved in investigating the circumstances.
Environmental inspectors and fish protection officers are currently determining the number of dead individuals and their species. This will determine the amount of environmental damage that will be assessed to the perpetrators. The police are also searching for those involved in violating water protection rules.
Investigators have initiated criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 242 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - violation of water protection rules, which caused mass death of animal and plant life. The guilty face up to five years in prison.
