Former US State Department Special Representative Kurt Volker said Donald Trump does not want to recognize obvious things about Vladimir Putin's actions in the war against Ukraine. He has sharply criticized the recent statements of the US President, including the alleged "drive" that Ukraine gave Putin for bombardment.
“It's a terrible comment. It ignores the fact that Russia is bombarding Ukraine daily - almost half a thousand drones only to Kiev and Kharkiv. It's not something new. Putin does not need a reason for attacks. This is his choice. He wants to destroy Ukraine as a state and a nation. And Trump does not recognize it - is the problem, ”Volker stressed.
When asked whose side is Trump - Ukraine or Russia - the diplomat replied: "Trump on the side of America." He considers the war alien to the interests of the United States, and despite its awareness of its horrific consequences, he is not too concerned with the conditions of its completion. "He wants to stop her, but he is not interested in how this will happen," Volker added.
Separately, the diplomat commented on the refusal of Pentagon Pitt Hegset to participate in the meeting of NATO Defense Ministers in Brussels. In his opinion, it was a conscious signal for Europe: Washington wants European allies to take more responsibility for helping Ukraine.
At the same time, Volker does not think that the US is distanced from Kiev. He noted that the United States continues to supply weapons, do not abolish sanctions and even consider new restrictions on Russia.
“Trump can go the way of permission to the direct purchase of weapons by Ukraine without the participation of the US state budget. This is quite likely, ”the former special representative of the State Department summed up.
