On September 9, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates the righteous Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This day has a special significance in the church calendar, because it was through these spouses that the Lord blessed the world with the birth of the Virgin Mary.
Holiday history
Joachim came from the lineage of King David, and his wife Anna was a deeply religious woman. For many years the couple remained childless, which in those days was considered God's punishment. One day an angel appeared to them with the good news: they would become the parents of a daughter, through whom humanity would receive blessings. Thus Mary was born - the future Mother of God.
When their daughter was three years old, Joachim and Anna took her to the Jerusalem Temple, where she was raised until she came of age. According to tradition, Joachim died at the age of 80, and Anna departed to be with the Lord two years later.
Traditions and prayers
Saints Joachim and Anne are revered as the patron saints of pregnant and childless women. They are prayed to for the birth of children, health, and family well-being.
The holiday is popularly known as the Day of Midwives. On this day, young mothers and former midwives are honored. Traditionally, a round cake is placed on the table - a symbol of family happiness and prosperity. Also, on this day, old things are disposed of to cleanse the house of illness and misfortune.
