A new mechanism for preventive vaccination against influenza has been introduced in Ukraine, which allows pharmacy employees to administer vaccinations. The press center of the Ministry of Health (MOH) reports this. This initiative is aimed at increasing the availability of vaccination and reducing the incidence of influenza.
The Ministry of Health noted that in order for pharmacies to be able to provide vaccinations, they must meet a number of requirements. Among them are the presence of a license for medical practice, the necessary material and technical support, a separately equipped room for vaccinations, and a waiting area for patients.
Currently, only one pharmacy in Kyiv, at 84/20 Velyka Vasylkivska St., fully meets these criteria and is authorized to provide vaccination services. It is expected that the number of pharmacies with a vaccination license will increase over time.
An important aspect is that not all pharmacy workers can administer the vaccine. This is only allowed to pharmacists who have undergone special training organized by experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) in September 2024.
To get vaccinated against the flu at a pharmacy, you need to follow the following algorithm:
- Get a prescription for the vaccine from your family doctor.
- Contact a pharmacy that is licensed to provide vaccinations.
- Purchase the vaccine at a pharmacy at your own expense.
- Fill out the vaccination consent form.
- Get vaccinated.
- Wait 30 minutes after vaccination for observation.
- Obtain a vaccination certificate and give it to your family doctor.
The Ministry of Health recommends getting vaccinated between September and October so that the body has time to develop immunity before the flu season. However, vaccination can be done later, depending on individual needs.
Since the beginning of October, vaccines of French and Korean production that have passed state quality control have been available in Ukrainian pharmacies.
