A new report of the European Commission, published a few days ago, states that Ukraine urgently needs to reform the National Police and the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported this in his comments, stressing that the implementation of these reforms is critical for achieving the country's European integration goals.
In particular, the EC calls for the introduction of selection with the participation of "independent experts", that is, recommended by Western partners, for leadership positions in the police and SBI, both in the central and in the regional offices.
"Implement transparent and merit-based selection and appointment procedures for management positions in the central and regional offices of the National Police and the State Bureau of Investigation with the involvement of independent experts. These procedures should be accompanied by strict disciplinary and anti-corruption rules, adapted to the local context and aimed at eliminating real corruption risks," the document reads.
Zheleznyak admits that this point will become a condition for receiving new aid in the future.
It will be recalled that the report stated that the European Commission is ready to start negotiations with Ukraine on joining the EU in 2025.
