The German defense concern Rheinmetall received a key order from the Ukrainian government for the construction of an ammunition production plant in Ukraine.
This news, which became known through the company's official website, was an important step in the expansion of Ukraine's defense capabilities.
According to a statement from Rheinmetall, the company received the first major order for the construction of the plant, which was announced in February 2024. The order includes complete technical equipment of the plant until its commissioning. The cost of the project is estimated to be in the three-digit million euro range, and construction is set to begin soon, with completion expected within a few years.
Rheinmetall's intention is to build at least four factories in Ukraine, which will contribute to the development of the national defense industry. The company also intends to start production of ammunition in Ukraine within 24 months. Together with the Ukrainian partner with whom the joint venture was established, Rheinmetall will be responsible for the operation of the new plant.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger emphasized that this project is a confirmation of trust in the expertise and production capabilities of the company. "We are turning our words into action, and together with our partner we will create a Ukrainian ammunition center," said Papperger.
This contract is not the only example of international investment in the Ukrainian defense industry. Earlier it became known that the American company Northrop Grumman plans to launch the production of medium-caliber ammunition in Ukraine. Also, the French-German conglomerate KNDS announced the creation of an enterprise in Ukraine, which will be engaged in the production of military equipment and ammunition. The French defense group Thales also signed several agreements with Ukraine, including the creation of a joint venture within the framework of cooperation with Ukroboronprom and FRDM.
