A complex six-hour operation was performed at the Kyiv hospital "Okhmatdyt", which changed the life of a 12-year-old girl with adrenogenital syndrome (AGS). Doctors successfully reconstructed the external genitalia, giving the patient the opportunity to live a full life and even have children in the future.
What is adrenogenital syndrome?
AGS is a rare disease caused by a malfunction of the adrenal glands that causes excess production of male hormones. In the case of a girl, this led to the abnormal development of male-type external genitalia, although the internal organs remained female (uterus, vagina, ovaries).
Details of the operation
Under the leadership of the head of the urology department Maksym Ponomarenko, doctors:
- The external genitalia were reconstructed using the tissues that formed the male organ.
- The urinary and genital systems were separated to restore normal anatomy.
- An anatomically correct vagina was created , which will ensure a comfortable life.
The operation was not only a medical breakthrough, but also a psychological relief for the girl, who suffered from bullying by her peers because of her peculiarity.
The operation was an important step for the girl's family, in which another child also suffers from AGS. Her surgery is scheduled for winter.
"Such a situation in one family is a very rare phenomenon," said pediatric urologist Alina Puzko.
Such operations in Ukraine are performed only in "Okhmatdyt", where a team of urologists, gynecologists, endocrinologists and psychologists works. Their professionalism and multidisciplinary approach open up new horizons for a happy future for children with rare diseases.
